Vivian Kahn: Gereny or Garany?
I have an 1889 Szobrancz birth record listing Garanas as birth place for STEIF Fulop (Shraga Feivel). Also searching for NEUMAN from Garany. I have found Gereny, now Gorjany (Horjany) about 5 km southeast of Uzhorod. There is also a Garany in Zemplen. Which of these two places is likely to have been identified as Garanas in 1889? I'm posting this message to both Ung and Zemplen forums. Please excuse duplication.

Vivian,
If you have any indication, that Steif possible moved from somewhere else, there is a place called Garanas in Austria.
I found that in Austria-Hungary sometimes they didn't specify which part of the Monarchy from. A while ago I run across a place called Belcze, couldn't find it anywhere in Hungary, turned out there is one in Poland(Germany before), one in Ukraine(Galicia before), and one in Moldavia(Besszarabia before).

Vivian Kahn: STEIF/Gereny/Horjany
I'm searching for STEIF family from Gereny, now Gorjany (Horjany) about 5 km southeast of Uzhorod. There is also a Garany in Zemplen. I've seen both spellings for both of these two different places.

seekingjankes: Jankes??
I dont know the correct spelling...please excuse that,HELP

I know is that my GGM came here with (or to join) Johann Meyers (again dont have correct spelling). Not sure if they were married or not, here or there, as census of 1910 says she immigrated in 1904, Johann imigrating in 1902. Some people that have checked census and passenger records and there was an Anna Jonkesz aboard in 1905 as single, Magyar, Gereny, Hungary, bound for her step sisters, Borbala Szemesko in New Brunswick, NJ.
